"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several famous fans have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos often show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

Historic Nod

The trio are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international fan base.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
