Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
