Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
